Hi, guys! I bet you all have been heard of manga or anime called Saiyuki! I have, of course! It’s Mafuyu from Goods Republic!!
I bet some of you have at least seen the illustration or manga! Why? Because Saiyuki is a long-serialized series, celebrating its 25th Anniversary! A television animation adaptation started to air in January 2022 too, going viral even more!
This is an article both for those who have never seen or watched Saiyuki and for those who are already familiar with it but want to review it!! Let’s do a FIVE-minute review of 25th year Saiyuki!!

What Is Saiyuki?

Saiyuki is a manga series by Minekura Kazuya-Sensei which was serialized in 1997. With some spin-off series releasing as well, it’s now celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. All the comics have sold over 25 million copies.
It spawned multiple manga sequels, anime adaptations, video games, a play adaptation. Saiyuki RELOAD -ZEROIN is the fifth anime adaptation.
YES! Saiyuki has released anime and movie adaptations multiple times so it’s been popular among various generations! So, there will be fans who might think nostalgic and also the ones who will watch it for the first time in this fifth time anime adaptation!!

Outline of Saiyuki!

One day, a man shows up, trying to revive the most powerful demon called “Bull Demon King” who was beaten before, by the mixed experiment of “science” and “magic.” When the Bull Demon King is about to be revived, this experiment spawns the negative wave throughout the peaceful world, Shangri-la, where both humans and demons co-exist, which makes many demons become violent.
Guanyin, who takes this matter seriously, orders four people: Genjyo Sanzo, Sha Gojyō (Sha Wujing), Cho Hakkai (Zhu Bajie) and Goku to stop the Bull Demon King from reviving, and start searching for what’s going on behind it.
This is how these four set for a journey to the west, searching for the negative wave.
This is a rough outline! We can see the past story of each character in the spin-off series too but...... the latest series of animation, Saiyuki RELOAD -ZEROIN-, focuses on the main story (a journey to the west)!

Goku

He is like a spirit, being born with all the energies from earth.
He is one of the most awkward existences in earthy paradise, who has been sealed for a long time, due to the “deadly sin” that he committed 500 years ago. He really trusts Sanzo who released him from sealing. Actually, he wanted to join this journey (at the beginning) just because Sanzo would join.
His fighting ability is quite high but he is significantly childish among all the members. However, we see him gradually grow through encounters with people he meets in the journey.

Genjyo Sanzo

He is one of the top five Buddhist priests/monks in earthly paradise.
Although he is a good-looking man, he has a sharp tongue, is unfriendly and short-tempered. He sometimes gets very childish. His personality is pretty far from being a priest/monk but his power of Buddhism, especially exorcising the evils, is incomparably high.
He hates to lose while staying calm and having good judgement. He has a leadership in his party.

Sha Gojyō
Sha Wujing

He is a half human and demon.
Due to this rare background, he has experienced a cruel incident in the past, such as going through his parents’ suicide and being bullied from people who took care of him after his parents’ death. Due to such a hard experience, he has a sharp tongue but never leaves women or children behind.
Although he looks naughty quarrelling with Goku every day, he is the kindest one among four. But at the same time, he easily gets deceived in a sense.

Cho Hakkai
Zhu Bajie

He is very calm and gentle.
He never likes conflict, unlike the other three, but they all say he is “the scariest individual when he gets mad.” His partner is a dragon named Jeep, which can transform into a car, giving everybody a ride.
He used to be a human before but due to a cruel incident, he has turned into a demon. He got so desperate, but then, Sha Gojyō saved him and ended up joining their journey.

Personally, I thought the episode was good even for those who are not familiar with Saiyuki yet, after I watched Episode 1! (It had a good tempo without no difficult storyline or explanation, which was so easy to understand!)
