Hi everyone! It’s Mafuyu from Goods Republic! Today, I am going to introduce a fall anime, but I do not have much confidence that I can explain this title’s good points well. It has surreal humor and uniqueness. I am worried now!
Oh you want to know the title? Well...... it’s...... the one that has no structure what-so-ever in the story. The most dangerous anime among all fall anime! We often get confused while watching the anime!

Continuing to anime season 1, Pop Team Epic has freedom in its content. It has way too much freedom and I don’t know how to explain it.
Honestly, I think watching the actual anime for 5 min will explain better than reading this article for 5 min. It has a mysterious feeling of running when you watch the anime. It is hilarious and you will experience surreal humor. I will try to do my best to describe this anime in writing.

What is Pop Team Epic?

It is written and illustrated by a manga artist, Okawa Bkub, and a Japanese four-panel surreal comedy webcomic.
Currently, serialized in a web four-panel comic website, “Manga Life WIN,” it has been gathering people’s attention. It contains many striking and unique panels, so many fans treat it as an Internet meme. Generally, no main storyline. You can read it anywhere. You probably don’t understand most parts. Jokes are incomprehensible, but you will end up laughing anyway.
It contains satire and jokes that are too difficult sometimes, so the editors canceled the serialization 6 times!!
However, every time it got canceled, it rises from the ashes again and again! Currently, the series is into season 7!

What kind of story is Pop Team Epic?

Well...... I don’t know.
Honestly, I don’t really know what kind of story it is. However, I can tell that creators are making this anime seriously.
Basically, there is no storyline. So you can start watching it anywhere. The story is about the crazy daily lives of two high school girls, Popuko and Pipimi.

Funny man (girl). 14 years old. Basically, she is extremely short-tempered and generally becomes enraged at very little things. A best friend to Pipimi.

Straight man (girl). 14 years old. Basically, she is the nicer one in the duo. However, at the same time, Pipimi still shows murderous intents and violence. She is very sweet to Popuko.

Why is Pop Team Epic so popular among Japanese people?

It is full of parodies, satires, and collaborations with others. (I wonder if they have proper permissions though.)
Anime Pop Team Epic is based on a four-panel surreal comedy webcomic, but the anime version has its own episodes, so there is no point to read the manga version. It is also full of parodies, so I am worried if they will be sued or complained at for the copyright violations.

The episode is divided into two parts, but they are exactly the same!
The only difference is the voice actors!

If you watch any episode of Pop Team Epic, you will understand.
This 30 minutes anime has two parts in an episode, and the first part (Part A) and the second part (Part B) are the exactly the same! This is crazy! You will watch the exact same thing twice! However, if you listen carefully, you will notice something is different. The voice actors of Popuko and Pipimi are different. You will probably notice the voice of the famous characters!

This anime has a super unique structure for each episode. They use the exact same animation with different and famous voice actors.
Even though they were the same stories, they look like a different story due to the voice actors. Some of them add ad-libs, change their voices, and take totally different approaches. There is a script, but the actors can act freely. The director likes the first take. You can enjoy the same anime twice with a different twist! This is the charm of Pop Team Epic!
